How to Make Your Own Home Apothecary

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

You’ll need:

  • Airtight jars or containers to store your herbs
  • Labels and a marker for easy identification
  • A mortar and pestle for grinding herbs
  • Small bottles for tinctures and oils
  • A cool, dark place to store your herbs (like a cupboard or drawer)

Step 2: Prepare Your Remedies

Begin by making simple remedies like herbal teas, tinctures, and infusions. For example:

  • Herbal Tea: Use dried herbs to make tea with hot water.
  • Tincture: Fill a jar halfway with dried herbs, then cover with alcohol (like vodka). Let it sit for 4-6 weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain and store in a dark bottle.
  • Infused Oil: Fill a jar with dried herbs, then cover with a carrier oil (like olive oil). Let it sit in a warm place for 2-3 weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain and store in a dark bottle.

Step 3: Organize Your Apothecary

Arrange your jars, tinctures, and oils in your designated storage space. Keep frequently used herbs easily accessible, and store less commonly used ones toward the back.

Step 4: Keep a Record

It’s helpful to keep a journal or notebook in your apothecary. Record the herbs you have, their uses, and any remedies you make. This will help you keep track of what works best for you and ensure you always have the right herbs on hand.

Continuing Education

There’s always more to learn. I’ve found it helpful to keep a few good reference books on herbalism on hand. Read books on Herbology, Join local or online herbal communities. Continue herbal education to learn nature’s best teachings.
