How to Make Incense Sticks

Making homemade incense sticks are simple and fun. Here is a simple yet perfect method for you.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of dried herbs (such as lavender, rosemary, or sandalwood)
  • 1/4 cup of natural binder (like makko powder or gum tragacanth)
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • Essential oils (optional, for added fragrance)
  • Wooden sticks or bamboo skewers (for rolling the incense)

Instructions:

  1. Grind the Herbs: Start by grinding your dried herbs into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle. This helps the incense burn evenly.

  2. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the powdered herbs with the binder. Gradually add water to the mixture until it reaches a paste-like consistency. If you’re using essential oils, add a few drops for extra scent.

  3. Shape the Incense: Take your wooden sticks or bamboo skewers and dip them into the incense paste, coating them evenly. Alternatively, you can roll the paste into small cones if you prefer.

  4. Dry the Incense: Place the coated sticks or cones on a rack or a piece of parchment paper to dry. Allow them to dry completely, which can take up to a week, depending on humidity.

  5. Burn and Enjoy: Once dry, your homemade incense is ready to use. Light the tip and enjoy the fragrant smoke as it fills your space.
